How to Calculate the Real Landed Cost of Imported Baby Diapers

The supplier’s unit price is not the full cost of an imported diaper order. Importers should calculate the total cost required to bring goods to the intended delivery point and then divide that amount by the relevant sales unit.

A practical framework is:

Total landed cost = product cost + packing-related charges + transport + insurance + export-related charges + import duties and taxes + customs and brokerage charges + local delivery + other confirmed costs

Requirements and calculations differ by destination market, shipment terms, product classification, and transaction structure. This guide does not replace customs, tax, legal, or financial advice.

1. Start with the Confirmed Product Cost

Use the commercial price confirmed in the supplier quotation. Confirm the currency, sales unit, quotation scope, and any costs not included in the quoted amount.

2. Add Packaging and Project Costs

Include separately confirmed packaging, artwork, labelling, or project-coordination costs where applicable. Do not assume these are included in the product price.

3. Add Transport and Insurance

Include the transport and insurance costs relevant to the agreed shipping arrangement. Confirm which party is responsible for each cost and at which point responsibility transfers.

4. Estimate Import Duties and Taxes

Ask your customs representative or relevant advisor to calculate applicable duties and taxes based on your destination market and correct product classification. Customs valuation methods and dutiable elements can be jurisdiction-specific.

5. Include Customs and Documentation Charges

Add customs representation, customs processing, document handling, port, terminal, or other confirmed transaction charges relevant to your import process.

6. Add Local Delivery Costs

Include transportation from the port, airport, or entry point to your warehouse, distribution point, or other agreed destination.

7. Calculate Cost Per Sales Unit

Divide the total landed cost by the unit relevant to your business, such as a pack, carton, pallet, or another internally defined sales unit.

8. Review the Calculation Before Ordering

Update your calculation when quotation terms, shipment method, document requirements, taxes, currency exposure, or local delivery costs change.
