FOB, CIF or EXW for Diaper Imports: Which Is Better?

There is no universally “best” delivery term for diaper imports. The appropriate choice depends on the buyer’s logistics capability, desired control, shipping method, documentation process, insurance needs, and destination-market obligations.

Under Incoterms® 2020, EXW is an any-mode rule, while FOB and CIF are intended for sea or inland-waterway transport. 

1. Understand EXW

Under EXW, goods are made available to the buyer at the agreed named place. The buyer should clarify loading, export formalities, transport, insurance, documentation, and onward coordination before accepting this structure.

2. Understand FOB

Under FOB, delivery and risk transfer occur when goods are on board the vessel at the named port of shipment. It is intended for sea or inland-waterway transport. 

3. Understand CIF

Under CIF, the seller arranges carriage and insurance to the named port of destination, while risk transfer does not necessarily wait until arrival. Buyers should review the exact insurance and document arrangements. 

4. Compare Logistics Control

EXW may place more coordination on the buyer. FOB may suit buyers arranging main carriage from the port of shipment. CIF may suit buyers who prefer the seller to arrange carriage and insurance to the agreed port. Each buyer should assess its own logistics process.

5. Compare Cost Scope

Request a written breakdown of what is included and excluded. Compare product cost, local handling, loading, export coordination, main transport, insurance, destination charges, customs, taxes, and local delivery.

6. Confirm Risk and Insurance

Discuss when risk transfers, what insurance is arranged, the scope of that insurance, and whether additional coverage is needed for your transaction.

7. Specify the Named Place or Port Precisely

The contract should state the selected Incoterms® rule, version, and exact named place or port. Clear wording reduces uncertainty during shipment coordination.

8. Choose Based on Your Import Model

Select the term that fits your commercial structure, shipping method, internal logistics capability, insurance approach, and destination-market process. Seek qualified legal, customs, and logistics advice where needed.
